How did the Emancipation Proclamation, signed in 1863 illustrate this nation's best ideals?

Literary Focus: Organization

Nonfiction, biographies, diaries, journals, fiction tend to be narratives written in chronological order. (Mon)

Essay however may use a variety of forms.

                            * show contrast

                            * specific to general

                            * order of importance

Setting a Purpose: As you read, note how Baldwin organizes his material. Watch how he connects ideas.

Recognizing Parallelism: (Mon)

*Parallelism: the use of phrases, clauses, or sentences that are similar in structure.

*Parallelism can create emphasis through repetition.

*Parallelism can create contrast.

*Parallelism is a technique used to reinforce connection beween ideas.

Baldwin's examples: 

Repetition: "first as an infant, then as a child, then as a man."

Contrast:    "Let him curse and I see a cellar"

                  "Let him curse and I remember him..."

Paralellism:  Locate five examples of parallelism (Mon)

Writer's Journal: Defining One's Identity (Tues)

Baldwin advises is nephew, " Know whence you came. If you know whence you came, there is really no limit to where you can go."

Why does Baldwin believe it is important to understand and accept one's heritage?
